Platform Duties
There are many roles you can do on the platform.
Starting with the Porter role. As a porter you will be a member of the station platform team. You tend to the trains, watching as they come into the platform and then assisting any passengers, should they require your help. You may be asked questions on train timings to upcoming events and even station history.
If you don't know the question, you can always ask another member of staff. There is also cleaning and station upkeep jobs to be done; whether its polishing brasses, cleaning windows, emptying bins or simply changing toilet rolls. There are plenty of jobs to do!
If you are under 18 you will join as a Junior porter.
The next step is a Safety critical role and will require a small examination and medical - Platform Inspector*. A platform inspector carries the same jobs as a Porter. However, its considered safety critical. You may be the one dispatching the trains which requires you to check signals, all of the doors and door handles as well as relaying information if required. As the train departs, you continue to stay on the platform checking no one attempts to board or leave the train. You check to make sure the tail lamp is on the end of the last coach which means the train is complete.
The most important role on the platform is a Station Master*. Here you have all of the platform duty roles, plus the responsibilities of arriving at least 45 minutes before the first train to unlock, and prepare the station. You will be a good team leader looking after other members of staff on duty, and you will be required to note down any occurrences that might happen in the Station Master's communication diary. At Rothley you will need to pass as a Booking Clerk to proceed to station master as you may need to man the booking office should it need filling on the roster.
* You may also need to be trained to use the single section staff and staff machine.
** Training, induction will be given.
Retail and Catering
The Tea room is a hive of activity on the station - selling a range of products from cups of tea, to chocolate bars and ice creams during the summer months. It also comes with your own personal coal fire in the winter periods! A warm welcome is something that passengers and visitors a like love! You will get to meet regular visitors and staff (even when off-duty!)

To travel on the train, passengers need tickets and at Rothley the booking office is a vital part of the station. As a Booking Clerk your job is to sell tickets to the passengers and provide information such as train times, delays, events, and pass on leaflets if requested. Also you will have to cash up and balance the books, so a good head for figures is recommended (Since there are no Calculators!...)
If you are interested in Volunteering, you can fill this form out and we will get back to you, or feel free to pop down to the station at the weekend and have a chat!
